Ami Comeford, Ph.D.

AMI COMEFORD (St. George) is a professor of English in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah Tech University, teaching courses in women’s literature, early British and nineteenth-century American literature, literary theory, women in pop culture, and the thesis writing course for seniors. Her academic work also focuses on popular culture. She was co-editor for a 2010 academic collection of essays entitled The Literary Angel: Essays on Influences and Traditions Reflected in the Joss Whedon Series and is currently serving as the co-editor with Dr. Tamy Burnett at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln on another collection of essays about representations of health and disability in television, which should be published soon. Ami has presented several papers at both national and regional conferences on work ranging from Civil War poetry and the teaching of transnational literature in the classroom to popular culture and feminism. She originally chartered the UT Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the student English Honor Society, when first arriving at UT in 2007. She has served as the adviser since then. As part of this professional responsibility, Ami was selected by the national leadership of Sigma Tau Delta to serve as the Regent for the Far Western Region and serve as a member of the national board for this organization, which she has been doing for the past six years. The organization has over 800 chapters worldwide. Ami has been selected as Utah Tech University’s Adviser of the Year multiple times as well as the Teacher/Faculty Member of the Year. She was also selected as the recipient of the international Elaine W. Hughes Outstanding Sponsor Award for her work as a student adviser with Sigma Tau Delta. She served on the board for Utah Humanities from 2011-2017 as chair of the Program Committee and then Chair of the Board and then Past Chair. She is also currently serving on the board for Arts to Zion and St. George Academy. She has served as the Faculty Senate President at UT and now as the President-Elect for the UT chapter of the Utah Women in Higher Education Network. As an addition to her academic and advising/mentoring responsibilities at UT, in 2013 Ami was appointed by former President Stephen Nadauld to serve as one of three university Ombuds. Together with these two other colleagues, Ami established a brand new Ombuds office on campus and has been active in that role ever since, assisting the campus community, providing training workshops, as well as attending additional professional training workshops as an Ombuds.
