Graduate Assistant Application
The M.A. in English program offers several graduate assistantships each year. Graduate assistants (GAs) usually teach 3 sections of first-year writing each year at the regular adjunct pay rate of $750 per credit hour (for a total of $9,000 per year). These assistantships are renewable for a second year given satisfactory performance in both teaching and graduate coursework (for more information, see DSU Policy 705). GAs must be enrolled in at least 6 credits per semester and maintain good standing in the program. GAs will attend a week-long workshop before classes begin in the fall and will enroll in a practicum during their first semester (ENGL 6820) to receive intensive training in teaching first-year writing.
GAs will need to be available to teach during the day. Most GAs, especially during the first year, will be assigned classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the morning and/or early afternoon and will be required to take a 3-credit practicum during the fall semester. The practicum will likely be offered in the early afternoon. GAs in their second year will have more flexibility with days, times, and types of courses being taught.
How to Apply:
You may apply to be a graduate assistant in 1 of 2 ways:
- Apply as part of your application to the master’s program. Check the box indicating you want to be considered for a graduate assistantship and upload your personal introduction.
- Or apply after you have been accepted to the program by sending the graduate-program coordinator a personal introduction.
Compose a statement (300-500 words) indicating why you would like this assistantship, what special qualifications you bring to it, and how the experience will affect your later professional plans.
To be considered for a graduate assistantship for the Fall 2019/Spring 2020 academic year, you must submit your graduate application and statement of intent by June 1st.
