English Department Scholarships
Allan and Suzan Payne English Scholarship
The Dixie State University English Department awards an annual $1,000 scholarship to an upper-level English major (60+ hours overall with at least 12 hours of English beyond 2010). Half of the money will be deposited in the student’s account at the beginning of the fall semester and half at the beginning of the spring semester.
- Deadline for application is March 15.
- Winner will be announced no later than April 15.
- Winner will be chosen by a committee composed of the English Department Chair, one faculty representing each English emphasis, and one student (preferably a graduating senior and/or a previous winner of this scholarship).
- Applicants must have a 3.5 overall GPA, submit a 500-word essay, which effectively argues why they should receive this scholarship, and complete an application form. Contact the English Department Chair for application forms and more information.
Allan Payne is a Professor Emeritus in the English Department at Dixie State. He began teaching in 1976 and retired in 2008. Suzan Payne taught English at the secondary level in St. George and also taught as an English adjunct at Dixie State.
The Mark Swain Endowment Scholarship

The final selection is made by a committee from the English Department and the student notified in late fall. The scholarship will be paid the following semester. Nominees must be English Majors with a strong GPA.
