The Southern Quill
Published annually, The Southern Quill is the English Department’s student-edited literary magazine. In circulation since 1950, the journal features poetry, short stories, and artwork produced by Dixie State University students; it also welcomes material from writers and artists who live in Washington County. The editorial staff at The Southern Quill administers the Annie Atkin Tanner Memorial Poetry Award, as well, a prize that is given to student poets for outstanding work.
The Southern Quill accepts submissions of poems, short stories, non-fiction, and visual art from university students, from the general public, and from young writers ages 12-17.

The Annie Atkin Tanner Memorial Poetry Scholarship Fund
Established in 1972 by Dr. Vasco M. Tanner to honor his wife Annie, the Tanner Fund awards three scholarship prizes each year to poets who attend Dixie State University. All poems submitted to The Southern Quill by DSU students receive consideration for the awards. To determine scholarship winners, our editorial staff carefully reviews and evaluates every poem which is submitted to the Quill by students. The editors then select the 10 strongest pieces from this pool and forward them to members of the Tanner family, who determine the first, second, and third place winners.
