Technical Writing & Digital Rhetoric, M.A.

The TW&DR program focuses on the intersections between technology and composition. Students study the foundation of rhetorical theory as it relates to and is represented in digital spaces, practice key communication skills, produce digital and print content, advance their knowledge and experience in writing across professional contexts, and prepare for the modern workforce, college-level teaching, or doctoral programs. Pursue this degree online or onsite.

Professional and technical writing courses introduce students to the procedures and practices that professional writers and editors use regularly, including grant writing, freelance writing, interactive media development, magazine production, technical editing, and document design.

Our Mission

The English Department at Utah Tech University strives to instill in students an appreciation for the centrality of language and literature in human culture, particularly their function in social, historical, and political contexts. Students who major in English master skills in analyzing and evaluating texts and other media, as well as learning how to produce focused critical essays.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Critical Strategies: Apply critical terms, theoretical concepts, and interpretative strategies in the study of the English language with its written and visual texts.
  • Cultural and Ideological Awareness: Identify and examine the ideologies and core cultural beliefs present in multiple genres, forms, and modes.
  • Collaborative Learning: Analyze and evaluate texts, apply research methods, and produce scholarly, technical, and/or creative writing through varying collaborative activities.
  • Research and Information Literacy: Conduct advanced research and produce scholarly, technical, and/or creative writing for potential publication or formal presentation that exhibits sound rhetorical structure and source integration.
  • Professional Development: Prepare for employment by developing and demonstrating skills in critical thinking and sophistication in scholarly, technical, and/or creative writing.
